Details: Join your Student Services crew for fresh bagels and cream cheese from The Works Cafe and coffee from a local coffee shop, Rwanda Bean, which is co-founded by 2L Nick Mazuroski. The coffee beans are responsibly sourced through a farmer’s co-op approach and a “50% for farmers” mission. Vegan cream cheese and gluten-free bread are available too. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN MUG as we will not supply disposable cups in an effort to reduce single-use paper/plastic waste.

Details: Mindful Mondays is an opportunity for Maine law students, faculty, and staff to learn and practice mindfulness meditation in an informal drop-in group. We meet every Monday from 12:15-1:00 pm on the Second Floor of the Library Annex. No experience or commitment is required. All are welcome! Many lawyers, judges, and law students engage in mindfulness meditation practice, which can improve focus and learning and help to manage stress and anxiety, among other benefits. Please join us if you are curious about learning mindfulness meditation or an experienced meditator who’d like a chance to practice with others here on campus. Each week there will be brief instruction in basic mindfulness meditation, a guided meditation led by an experienced practitioner, and the opportunity for Q&A. We provide written resources and information for developing your own practice.

  • The SBA will hold speeches in the 1L classroom on Tuesday, December 4th during the lunch hour. All interested candidates should sign-up on the public sign-up sheet that can be found on the 1st floor bulletin board. Details: Law School Follies Hosted by SBA. Join us to celebrate the end of the semester and share some laughs as we make fun of law school life. Students, faculty and staff are welcome to participate in a skit, please notify Hilary Forsley ASAP if you wish to participate (hilary.forsley@maine.edu)

Maine Law Partnership with Maine Home for Little Wanderers – Snowflake Drive 

  • Each year, Maine Law partners with Maine Home for Little Wanderers to collect toys and clothing for children in Maine.This nonprofit organization puts together care packages with toys, clothes, and school supplies for Maine families at the holidays.
  • As part of our “Snowflake Drive”, which was founded by Parents In Law, there will be “snowflakes” decorating the walls near the elevator. Each snowflake has an item request and the age of a child.
  • If you would like to contribute, please take a snowflake off the wall, get the item (new and unwrapped), and leave it with Iris Michaud, Rm 102.
  • Last year, Maine Home For Little Wanderers was able to deliver over 1,700 care packages! Maine Law plays an important part in this toy drive; your generosity is deeply appreciated

Wednesday, 12/5 | Administrative Law in Context: Public Charge & the Impact on Immigrant Communities 

Details: Join the Multicultural Law Society for a presentation on how administrative law works in the context of immigration. Julia Brown, ILAP’s Advocacy and Outreach Attorney, will be presenting information on recently proposed changes to the Public Charge ground of inadmissibility, a rule which prevents immigrants from being admitted to the US or becoming green card holders if they are likely to depend on government benefits in the future. The proposed expansion of this rule has the potential to greatly impact immigrant families across the country and right here in Maine, by adding new factors for consideration in a public charge determination. Come find out more about how major changes to our immigration system can be accomplished through federal regulations, all without going through Congress.

Monday, 11/5 | Human Trafficking Laws, Enforcement, and Effective Advocacy
Details: Please join us for a presentation of the current landscape of Human Trafficking laws in Maine, with an emphasis on sex trafficking and exploitation. Presenters will discuss what they’re seeing in their communities and how to effectively advocate for people affected by trafficking and exploitation. The presentation will also include how to work within a multi-disciplinary team with attorneys, law enforcement, service providers, and advocates in these cases. Panelists: Nate Walsh, Esq, from Assistant District Attorney, Maine Prosecutorial District 3, Jaime Ricker from Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services, and Beth Earle from Safe Voices. Lunch will be provided. Wednesday, 11/7| PRO BONO FAIR, held by the MSBA New Lawyers’ Section
Details: This annual pro bono fair is an incredible opportunity to meet local organizations working in the nonprofit industry. It is a FREE event, with an open bar and food.

  • NLS will have some amazing pro bono organizations present, including Pine Tree Legal Assistance, Volunteer Lawyers Project, Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project, Legal Services for the Elderly, Maine Community Law Center, Campaign for Justice, Disability Rights, and more!  Come to the fair, have a drink with your colleagues, and learn how you can volunteer!
  • As an added bonus, NLS will be giving away some fantastic prizes, including an iPad, an Apple Watch, an Amazon Kindle, and an Amazon Echo. While the goal is to encourage you to volunteer, you will be eligible to win just by showing up and interacting with the pro bono organizations.

Details:The Portland Mentoring Alliance (PMA) matches volunteers from our community with Portland High School students to create supportive mentoring relationships. Maine Law and PMA have a long-standing partnership of roughly 10 years. Various Maine Law students have undertaken mentor roles with many wonderful success stories. Many students who request a mentor are first generation immigrants or refugees who benefit from having a native English-speaking adult help them navigate this important time in their lives. Join us to ask questions, hear stories, and how to get involved! Pizza provided!
