Monday, 11/5 | Human Trafficking Laws, Enforcement, and Effective Advocacy
Details: Please join us for a presentation of the current landscape of Human Trafficking laws in Maine, with an emphasis on sex trafficking and exploitation. Presenters will discuss what they’re seeing in their communities and how to effectively advocate for people affected by trafficking and exploitation. The presentation will also include how to work within a multi-disciplinary team with attorneys, law enforcement, service providers, and advocates in these cases. Panelists: Nate Walsh, Esq, from Assistant District Attorney, Maine Prosecutorial District 3, Jaime Ricker from Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services, and Beth Earle from Safe Voices. Lunch will be provided. Presented by the Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic and Muskie School for Public Service.

Monday, 11/5 | Mindful Mondays
Details: Mindful Mondays is an opportunity for Maine law students, faculty, and staff to learn and practice mindfulness meditation in an informal drop-in group. No experience or commitment is required. Many lawyers, judges, and law students engage in mindfulness meditation practice, which can improve focus and learning and help to manage stress and anxiety, among other benefits. Please join us if you are curious about learning mindfulness meditation or an experienced meditator who’d like a chance to practice with others here on campus. Each week there will be brief instruction in basic mindfulness meditation, a guided meditation led by an experienced practitioner, and the opportunity for Q&A. We provide written resources and information for developing your own practice.

Wednesday, 11/7 | From Intake to Income with Intention: How to Build Your Case
Details: Join Dov Sacks from Berman & Simmons to learn about how to frame your case for success. There are no “good” and “bad” cases, only good and bad lawyers. Successful lawyers understand how to transform the most difficult case facts into compelling—and winning—narratives through persuasive case FRAMING. Using actual case examples, attorney Dov Sacks will demonstrate time-tested techniques and tactics to frame your most difficult case.

Wednesday, 11/7| PRO BONO FAIR, held by the MSBA New Lawyers’ Section
Details: This annual pro bono fair is an incredible opportunity to meet local organizations working in the nonprofit industry. It is a FREE event, with an open bar and food.

  • NLS will have some amazing pro bono organizations present, including Pine Tree Legal Assistance, Volunteer Lawyers Project, Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project, Legal Services for the Elderly, Maine Community Law Center, Campaign for Justice, Disability Rights, and more!  Come to the fair, have a drink with your colleagues, and learn how you can volunteer!
  • As an added bonus, NLS will be giving away some fantastic prizes, including an iPad, an Apple Watch, an Amazon Kindle, and an Amazon Echo. While the goal is to encourage you to volunteer, you will be eligible to win just by showing up and interacting with the pro bono organizations.
